USer Comment Glenn: we also passed this scene prior to emergency vehicle getting to scene. Accident site was the beginning of the worst stretch of road on Hwy 93. Loads of head-ons. Speed often a factor. I am not saying it was in this case, but as a motorcycle rider I have had close calls on this stretch of highway. Prayers go out to the family. 9 years ago > REPLY

USer Comment Xristian Simon: Again, too the family, I'm so sorry. I can tell you as I rode my bike down sr93 yesterday that it took all of my concentration to keep my bike under control. The torrential rain, poor visibility, loose gravel at times, roadworks, commercial 18 wheelers, dead deer in the middle of the road, single lanes at times combined with the already treacherous sr93 made the trip the most dangerous ride I've ever encountered in 34 years as a motorcycle rider. I fell apart when I got to my destination. Again, I'm so deeply sorry for your loss. The road and weather conditions were most definitely against us. 9 years ago > REPLY

USer Comment Sam: I cannot tell you how saddened my wife and I were to witness the event. It all happened so fast. We were in the car in front of the accident heading the opposite direction of the motorcyclist. He was behind a semi and another car. As I was heading toward the semi, I thought to myself, “That semi sure is kicking up a lot of water.” There had been heavy rain. It looked like the semi and car in front of him were slowing down / merging which he could not see or didn’t see in time. It appeared that he sideswiped the car in front of him, pushing him toward our car on the other side of the road. He laid the bike down into the opposite lane of traffic. I am quite confident that it was an immediate passing of this kind man. My wife called 911 within seconds of the incident. I am so sorry there was nothing we could do. I hope this helps. Please accept our most sincere condolences to his family and friends. 9 years ago > REPLY

USer Comment Sandi: Me and my two young sons drove by this awful scene. Weather was not good and people were driving faster than normal. My heart is broken for the family and friends. USer Comment Barbie: I knew a lot of people who went on this trip, and was worried about all of them, some more than others. I would never have imagined losing a rider like Cort this way. He was the first road guard I met when I started riding my first Harley and he took me under his wing like a little baby bird. He coached me and helped to make me a better rider. We had a lot of laughs together, along with the many others he knew. Will miss your smile Cort. Thank you for the memories. 9 years ago > REPLY

USer Comment The Mickeys: Sad day to lose a life, any life for that matter! God Bless you, Cort! You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers! We last saw Cort heading out on his bike to visit a friend in Phoenix that day! When our motorcycles passed in opposite directions, he gave us that BIG OLE’ Cort smile that we’ve all grown to love and he waived enthusiastically to us showcasing that HOG family love! To hear that he had a tragic accident, just fills us with profound sadness! But to those who witnessed and then shared what they knew about that event on this website, THANK you! Helps to wipe away the sadness! 9 years ago > REPLY

USer Comment BioHaz: We were FNGs on our first RFTW together, tail gunners in the same platoon the next. I won the knife, but gave it to him. USer Comment Trish: Even tho I have never met the gentleman lying on the road; by reading some of the messages I wish I did. I just wanted to take some time to write something. My grandson and I came up on the accident probably mins. after it happened. Like every other weekend we have to travel this road to pick up and drop off my grandson for his visition with his dad. I pray every other weekend that we have a safe trip on this road. We see the crosses on the side of the road and don't think to wonder the story of the person who possibly lost their life there. After witnessing for the first time in my life someone lifeless lying on the road it will stay with me for the rest of mine. I just want to say I wish this gentleman's family and friends my deepest condolences, by the sounds of it he will be deeply missed by many. Even tho I have always given people on motorcycles the up most respect since my husband drives his motorcycle everyday to work. This just brings it more home to for me. USer Comment Sonya : Wasn't going to post- but am so touched by all the sentiments that have been left- well...here I go. I was there just moments after. I, too, said a prayer for the rider as I drove by. It was obvious from the posts above by those who knew him that he was just one of those very special people. Those type don't come around often enough do they? It's obvious by the posts of all of us who didn't know him that we felt that too because here we all are. RIP - so sorry for the family 9 years ago > REPLY

USer Comment John OBP: Cort was short in stature, large in heart, with a smile that would warm the coldest heart. His selfless dedication and caring for all he came in contact with, young and old, set him out from the crowd. Herved his country and his fellow man well beyond the norm, but did not seek recognition or fame for his efforts. He was a man among men and example for the young. He may begone from this earth, but not from our hearts. RIP 9 years ago > REPLY

USer Comment Al Moore: I had the honor of flying many, many missions with Cort while we served in the 7/1 Air Cav. He was the Platoon Leader of the Scout platoon. He was a great pilot and leader. The Blackhawk reunions gave us the chance to become friends and we've stayed in touch for over 20 years. He stayed at our home when he came to Virginia Beach to visit his daughter. He will definitely be missed. 9 years ago > REPLY

USer Comment Jim and Maureen Ullian: We met Cort a few times when he came to Virginia to visit his beautiful daughter whom we've know since her middle school years. I have learned more about this wonderful man as I read through all of the touching comments. It took me 2 days to read them all in between tears. Cort, we will watch Carolyn for you as we love her like a daughter. 9 years ago > REPLY

USer Comment Moose: My wife and I want to express our condolences to the Stark family. We were on our way home from Vegas and we followed Cort for approx 15 minutes which was the time from the last right lane merge to where his tragic accident happened, and Cort gave us a wave as we let him into the lane. From our perspective the car that he first hit did not allow enough room for Cort to adjust and given the conditions he couldn't slow down quick enough to avoid hitting the car. The rest of the accident was a blur. We have had countless restless nights since Sunday and we continue to pray for all involved. 9 years ago > REPLY

USer Comment PBB: It'taken my a few days before I could visit this site. My shock at the loss was too large. When I picked up the phone and heard Paul tell me that we had lost Cort,my heart broke. Met him at Marina Cortez in 2003 and as fellow sailors shared an instant kinship. We became friends and shared many good times. When you become a friend of Cort he includes you in his circle of friends. We shared many adventures and laughs. Cort was the type of person who would drop everything from his own list to help his friends. He would lend tools, share his talentand Make you feel like you could accomplish anything. If more help was needed he only had to call and more help would be there. No matter how dirty the job you had a good time. His smile, his impish grin, the tWinkle in his eye and his genuine thanks were reward enough. He was generous, supportive, and encouraging. I've never met anyone else like him and he will be missed.Only Carolyn knows how much. Picking her up at the airport was a mix of emotions. Glad to see her but sad for the reason. Thanks to all who have commented, and those who are helping her with Cort's estate. Please pray for her as she deals with the situations. 9 years ago > REPLY

USer Comment PITB: Isn't it ironic, the week I say to myself, 'Self, Email Cort and see how he's doing and say hi again'. I thought vividly of him for 3 days prior to this tragic news. He helped my wife and I build a new cedar fence around our pool shortly after our wedding. A real man's man. Had a few occasions to ride with him, work with him, run with him, joke with him, be serious with him, and sit in Lodge with him. I'm sorry I put off that email my Brother. PS: Did he ever run '100' marathons? I'd seen about 40 or 50 marathon metals in his home when I last visited him a few years ago. 9 years ago > REPLY

USer Comment Rosamond Hoerr: I just now found out about Colonial Cort. We are sick to our stomachs. I had to come and find out what happened. Cort was a good man and he attended Randolph Macon Military Academy as a young boy. He loved to run in marathons and he was passionate about it, running all over the world. Cort never missed the motorcycle ride to see the children sick in the hospital, taking gifts with the gang every year. Sometimes, you'd see his truck filled with fire wood, as he was taking it all the way down to the fire pits at the beach for other people, strangers, to enjoy. He loved cooking large meals to help others and was always involved in some charity. He never missed the Christmas Show at Emanuel Faith Church and we attended together several times. He adored a squadron of WW11 pilots, which he tried to dine with often. They knew him well and they loved his spirit. He just wanted to live every single minute. He often encouraged me to do the same. He was always telling me, ' get out there and live.' It will haunt me, those words of his. I have gifts that Cort brought me on Christmas for several years as we spent the holidays together. My kids loved Cort and I did, too. He was a big brother, Godfather, Mentor, and Friend. Ride on my friend. You were doing just what you loved to do. Atta Boy. 9 years ago > REPLY

USer Comment Bonnie B: I met Cort at our 40th high school reunion. When he learned my daughter was renting a room near LA (and I live in VA), he offered to let me stay at his place when I visited her. On one visit, he lent me his car so she and I could visit the studio of another classmate, Stan Winston, and lent me the convertible he had just bought for Carolyn to take my daughter and her friend to Newport Beach for Mother’s Day on another visit. We always went to church on Sunday and had to sit in the front row. He was a member of their “Hearts and Hands” helping those who needed carpentry work. And we didn’t just go for a jog around the neighborhood back in 2004, we jogged up a nearby mountain! I even took a spin on the back of his motorcycle, my first and only ride on a Harley. It’s been awhile but I think we had dinner at your place, Rosamond. At our 50th reunion, last October, Cort helped me buy the wine Friday night. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and a devout man who, unquestionably, was welcomed with open arms at the Pearly Gates. 9 years ago > REPLY

USer Comment Roger: When Cort was at Hunter Leggett in the 70's, he helped our High School class as we backpacked the coast range of Los Padres. He honored us with a meal in the officer's dining room which used to be the Hearst Ranch. He patrolled the area in his helocopter! He was eloquent and had a strong presence. I new that he was a great man but I didn't fully appreciate how heroically he'd lived his life until it ended. 8 years ago > REPLY

USer Comment ABK: I was the driver of the car hat Col Cort struck. I had merged left to pass two stalled semi trucks. There was no close on coming traffic in the left lane when I merged in to it. I was going about 50mph when he hit the left rear of my car. It was not my fault, but I have suffered tremendously from this incident. I grieve the loss of Col. USer Comment VolvoRed: HE WAS NOT IN THE LEFT LANE WHEN I MERGED THERE. I KNOW YOU WANT TO BLAME ME, BUT HE WAS NOT IN THE LEFT LANE WHEN I MERGED INTO IT. I PASSED THE FIRST SEMI, WAS UP TO THE CAB OF THE SECOND WHEN COL. CORT HIT ME. I DID NOT CUT HIM OFF. I DID NOT MERGE IB FRONT OF HIM. I WAS GOING ABOUT 50 MPH WHEN HE HIT ME. HE HIT ME. GET IT? HE HIT ME. THE WEATHER WAS AWFUL. HE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN RIDING. ONCE AGAIN, WITH EMPHASIS, I DID NOT MOVE IN FRONT OF HIM. HE WAS NOT IN THE LANE WHEN I MERGED LEFT. SOMEONE SHOULD BE LOOKING INTO THE TWO SEMI TRUCKS THAT WERE STOPPED IN THE RIGHT LANE. MY SINCERE SYMPATHY FOR ALL WHO TREASURED THIS FINE MAN. 7 years ago > REPLY
